Palpable apprehension and panic have hit the people of Igbara-Oke Community in Ifedore local government area of Ondo state following the sudden death of a patient who died as a result of complication from Coronavirus pandemic few days ago.
SUNSHINETRUTH learnt that those living in the town especially health workers at Government’s General Hospital, Igbara-Oke who had contacts with the deceased patient and their family members who are secondary contacts, were said to be gripped by fear of contracting the disease.
A reliable source at the hospital told SUNSHINETRUTH that two of the health workers, a doctor and nurse had been sent on self isolation.
The source said, “the workers in General Hospital Igbara oke are leaving in fear as one of their Patients tested positive for coravirus. The said Patient was rushed into the Accident and Emergency Unit of the facility on Saturday, 23rd of May, 2020 around 4pm with the history of cough, edema and difficulty in breathing.
“On examination, He was said to be restless, tachycardia and in obvious respiratory distress. Standard precautionary measures were taken in attending to the patient. All effort to resuscitate the Patient proved abortive as he died 5 minutes after getting to the Hospital.
“The Doctor who attended to the Patient queried coronavirus as his diagnosis. Sample was collected and send to State NCDC for coronavirus screening.
“The relatives denied the symptoms they had ealier stated the moment they were told corpse will need to be screen for covid 19.
“The corpse was taken away by the relatives. The result came out POSITIVE for covid 19 today 26th may, 2020. Dr Abitoye and Nurse Falusi who attended to the Patient has been sent on compulsory self Isolation,” th e source said.
The death of the patient made the number of fatalities in Ondo state to rise to two as confirmed by Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu yesterday.
According to Akeredolu, “today (yesterday), four more cases have been added, making a total of 24 cases. The fourth case (24th case) was presented to the General Hospital Igbara Oke as a regular patient of flu, fever, cough and other symptoms similar to those of COVID-19.
“He died the same night he was brought to the hospital. Not leaving things to chances, our health workers ensured the corpse was tested for COVID-19 and the result came back positive.
“The corpse has since been buried in his hometown, Iragbiji, Osun State. Apart from contacting Osun State Government accordingly, we have activated a wide line tracing to arrest further infection and possible spread.
“May I on behalf of the Government and people of Ondo state express our condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. We pray for God’s comfort and eternal guidance for all that he left behind,” Akeredolu prayed.
