OAUSTECH signs MoU with leading Brazilian varsity on science, tech programmes


Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Nigeria has finally signed a Memorandum of Understanding with a leading Brazilian university, University of Campinas (UniCamp), Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil.

The announcement was made by the excited OAUSTECH Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Temi Emmanuel Ologunorisa yesterday in the institution's Main Campus along Igbokoda/Okitipupa Road, Okitipupa, Ondo State.


UniCamp is one of the best three universities in Brazil and it is outstanding in areas of science and technology.

According to Paul Adeagbo, the Institution's Deputy Director, Information, Protocol and Public Relations, the partnership is expected to cover exchange of staff and students between the two institutions, sharing scientific information and collaborating in joint research.

“The two institutions initiated talks on partnerships and collaborations mid-last year, which culminated in the signing of the MoU on Monday, 23 January, 2023.

“Although one of Brazil’s younger institutions, UniCamp, established in 1964, has established itself as a primary medical and scientific research centre. It has also, as part of research and development, produce a high amount of patented material, outstripping other larger institutions and companies. 

"UniCamp achieved a major breakthrough in 2003 when scientists from the institution licensed a patent for genetic death detection, and in more recent years scientists at Unicamp have developed a test for detection of the Zika virus. 

“Prof Ologunorisa is excited with the development because of the profile of the Brazilian institution, as OAUSTECH established in 2008 has a lot to benefit from the relationship. 

“According to world ranking bodies (Times Higher Education - THE,  QS World University Ranking 2021, CAPES - Coordination for the Improvement of Higher Education Personnel), Unicamp is recognized as one of the three best universities in Latin America, one of the top 100 universities in emerging economies and top Brazilian university in number of patents.

“It is also adjudged as the best in Brazil in the areas of Computer Science and Engineering and Technology for two consecutive years (2018-2019), second place in the ranking of the most entrepreneurial universities in Brazil according to Confederation of Junior Enterprises (Brazil).

“Since assuming duty on 23 February, 2022, Prof. Ologunorisa has formed a number of partnerships with leading universities across the globe: University of Missouri at Kansas City (UMKC), Morgan State University, Maryland, Auburn University, Alabama all in the United States, as well as African Regional Institute for Geospatial Information Science and Technology (AFRIGIST), and The University of Gambia, Banjul, The Gambia.

“OAUSTECH recently began the process of renewing its partnership with Carebbean Maritime University, Kingston, Jamaica in maritime studies and related programmes to develop the blue economy of the coastal region in which the institution is located.

“It commenced BSc Accounting, BSc Business Management, BSc Entrepreneurship and BSc Project Management in 2022/2023 academic session, while putting touches towards commencement of BSc Applied Geology and BSc Nursing Science programmes.
