The National Museum of Unity, Ibadan and Tunde Odunlade Art and Culture Connexion, Ibadan, are celebrating Global Africa History Month to showcase Africa's culture and art.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN ) reports that the programme held in Ibadan on Tuesday has its theme as 'Black Resistance: On Sustainable Arts and Culture We Dwell'.
Delivering a lecture on the topic, a Cultural Enthusiastic and Chief Executive Officer of Alternative Intelligence, Ibadan, Dr Tunde Adegbola, remarked that arts, crafts and technology were products of culture and should be seen as such.
Adegbola urged Africans to see the three as a multi-dimensional composite phenomenon which has vital elements of the modern day.
"We should organise our minds, re-engage our past and discover the technological basis of our past, we need to shake off the influence of colonialism.
"We should see ourselves as we are and ought to be and act accordingly as far as our culture is concerned," he said.
He emphasized that countries who made tremendous progress never neglected their art and culture.
To make more progress, he therefore called on Nigerians and government at all levels to give culture top priority.
The Curator, National Museum of Unity, Ibadan, Mrs Oriyomi Otuka says the Global Africa History Month initiated by Dr Carter Woodson, an African American of note in 1929, is celebrated annually across the globe.
Otuka said it was a time to reflect on Africa's acheivements, historical landmarks, science, culture and philosophy on the continent and in the diaspora.
"There are several activities lined up for the event for the next eight days from today to Feb. 21.
"The programme will be featuring activities including inaugural lecture, dedication of Mesiogo hall, art exhibition, stage plays, showcase of Akintola's car, among others.
"This is to portray and diversify the art of our culture, Africa in global History welcomes monographs, still images and edited volumes which tackle the themes of intervention and developments," she said.
The CEO of Tunde Odunlade Art and Culture, Prince Tunde Odunlade, urged all to actively participate in the activities and make most use of the opportunity.
While remarking that the importance of art and Culture cannot be overemphasized, Odunlade called on all stakeholders to join in the preservation and promotion of art and Culture across Nigeria. (NAN)
