Unemployment can be defined as an individual who are unable to find a job, in a situation where skilled and talented people wanted to do a job. But cannot find a proper job due to several reasons in the society.
Unemployment is a very serious issue not only in Nigeria but in the whole world. There are hundreds and thousands of people out there who do not have employment. Besides, the problems of unemployment are very severe in Nigeria because of the growing population and demand for jobs. Moreover, if we neglect this problem then it will be going to become the reason for the doom of the nation.
Today, people find it difficult to get employed based on merit and these have denied well qualified Nigerians the opportunity to get employed in any sector of the country. Meanwhile, it is indeed the expectation of any graduate to get a well-paying job but the Nigeria labour sector as come out differently as there is no meaningful job anywhere after the mandatory of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme.
However, there are factors causing the high unemployment rate in Nigeria, which pose a big threat to the major population. One of this is corruption, another challenge is favouritism, nepotism and tribalism, became key requirement for job placement and replacement in both public and private sectors.
Corruption, neglect of agricultural and other natural resources, poor quality education, a lack of working skills, overpopulation, inflation, and a decrease in economic value are some of the key reasons behind unemployment in Country.
This days, people rarely get employed based on merit but mostly through connections and these have denied well qualified Nigerians the opportunity to get employed in any sector of the country.
The Nigerian system has broken down as there is no sector that is well-performing that can absorb or reduce the rate of unemployment which later result in a high level of poverty which make so many youths engage in criminal activities.
Another effect of unemployment is political instability. It has become on of the most damaging effects of unemployment because large number of people who are out of work can lead to social unrest and in extreme cases leads to revolution.
More also, wastage of man power resources, citizen becoming liability to the government, feeling of despair and hopelessness among the youths and adults, family tension, shame and stigma when necessary needs can't be afford, increase in social isolation, demoralization and increase in crime as we can see it everywhere in the part of Nigeria are also major effects of unemployment in the society.
However, it is not all lost. The government can still turn around the situation if the following solutions can be put forward,. If unemployment want to be reduced in Nigeria, the government should endeavor to encourage entrepreneurship, improve infrastructure, promote economic growth, raise the retirement age, giving out loans and grants to people who have dream but are not financially buoyant and also invest in education and training and hopefully I believe the situation of the country I turn out good.
