The Senate has dismissed a proposed amendment to the Electoral Act of 2022 put forth by Senator Karimi Sunday of Kogi West Senatorial District seeking to replace elected lawmakers.
According to Channels, this amendment sought to permit political parties to substitute candidates in the event of elected officials' resignation, death, or vacancies in the National Assembly and State Assemblies.
Senator Sunday highlighted the aim of the bill as enabling the winning party to nominate replacements, thereby preventing unnecessary expenses on fresh elections in federal and state constituencies due to vacancies.
Despite Senator Sunday's explanation, a substantial number of his fellow lawmakers were unconvinced by the proposal's validity.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio offered Senator Sunday the chance to withdraw or modify the bill, but he declined.
As a result, the bill was ultimately rejected through a voice vote.
