The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has expressed condolences to the families affected by the tragic tanker explosion in Jigawa, where at least 147 lives were lost.
A mass burial was held for the victims, who died after attempting to scoop fuel from a fallen tanker in Majia, Jigawa.
FRSC Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed extended his thoughts and prayers to the bereaved families and emphasized the need for adherence to safety regulations. The explosion, which occurred after a DAF tanker carrying Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) crashed, resulted in 94 immediate deaths.
The toll later rose to 147 as authorities confirmed the number of casualties on Wednesday.
Shu’aibu Hambali, chairman of Taura Local Government Area, disclosed the updated figure on a live interview with Arewa Radio on Wednesday evening.
The mass burial ceremony followed shortly after.
Mohammed stressed that such incidents underscore the critical importance of following safety guidelines.
He urged road users to remain cautious and wait for FRSC emergency personnel to handle situations involving hazardous materials.
He also advised the public to keep a safe distance from tankers during such incidents, as the contents are highly flammable and can lead to severe injuries or fatalities.
According to reports, the fire was triggered when villagers rushed to collect fuel from the overturned tanker shortly after the crash.
The accident occurred when the DAF tanker, attempting to avoid a speed bump at high speed, became detached from its trailer, leading to the fatal explosion.
The FRSC has launched further investigations into the crash and instructed commanding officers at local tank farms to ensure that tankers meet minimum safety standards before transporting flammable substances.
Injured victims have been taken to Ringim General Hospital, Jahun General Hospital, and Khadija Clinic Majia for medical care.
