Hon. Comrade Francis Obule JP, Senior Special Assistant to the Delta State Governor on Political Matters, has called on the APC National Chairman, Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje, to retract his recent statement about "capturing" the Ondo State gubernatorial election for the All Progressives Congress (APC).
According to Obule, Ganduje’s approach undermines democratic principles and shifts focus away from presenting voters with meaningful policy choices for Ondo State's future.
In a statement, Obule emphasized that democracy hinges on the people’s right to freely select their leaders. He warned that the use of terms like "capture" reflects an agenda that could harm Nigeria's democratic process. "Winning an election is achieved through a fair voting process, not by taking control of a state," he said.
Obule further challenged Ganduje, stating, "If capturing a state were so easy, you should have secured Kano during the 2023 gubernatorial election. Using presidential influence to impose power is an unacceptable deviation from democratic values." He warned that any attempt to wield power in a way that stifles choice goes against Nigeria's democratic ethos.
Reflecting on Nigeria's history, Obule noted that Nigerians have struggled to overcome eras of limited political choice and unilateral control. He cautioned Ganduje against steering Nigeria back toward a one-party system reminiscent of the Abacha era, where democratic diversity was curtailed.
Obule continued, "Let us not forget the pain and sacrifices made after the annulment of the June 12 election in 1993. Democracy in Nigeria was hard-won and cannot be taken for granted." He urged Ganduje to respect the electoral process and allow the people of Ondo State to decide their future leaders freely.
He reminded leaders of the historical legacy left by those who prioritized Nigeria’s stability and unity, mentioning figures like Awolowo, Enahoro, and Tafawa Balewa. "Leaders are remembered not for stifling choice but for supporting Nigeria’s democratic project. Careless statements that undermine this hard-won democracy are not acceptable," Obule remarked.
Finally, he appealed to INEC, security agencies, and other stakeholders to remain neutral in the upcoming Ondo election, ensuring a fair process that reflects the people's will. "It’s crucial for these institutions to avoid partisanship and uphold democracy by respecting the people’s choice,” he concluded.
