The HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths, led by Comrade Sweet Otiotio, have issued a strong call to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for the immediate release of former Delta State Governor, Senator Dr. Arthur Ifeanyi Okowa. Known as "The Road Master" and affectionately called “The Ekwueme of the Universe,” Okowa is celebrated for his transparent governance and transformational impact throughout his two-term tenure.
In a recent press conference, Comrade Otiotio, representing HOSTCOM (Host Communities of Nigeria Producing Oil and Gas) Urhobo Youths, emphasized Okowa’s numerous contributions to Delta State’s development, peace, and empowerment initiatives. Otiotio stated that Okowa’s leadership legacy includes extensive infrastructure improvements, efforts toward peace in oil-producing areas, and youth empowerment programs that transformed the lives of Deltans.
"We cannot overlook Okowa’s remarkable contributions, especially his extensive road networks connecting rural areas to urban centers, which brought development and accessibility to all parts of Delta State," Otiotio remarked. "His administration completed over 1,500 kilometers of roads, linking communities and boosting commerce. His leadership earned him the respect of Deltans who directly benefited from these developments."
Otiotio noted that Okowa's projects, such as the completion of the International Airport and strategic road networks in Warri, Sapele, and Ughelli, opened Delta State to greater trade and economic growth. These initiatives were not just about infrastructure but also about addressing critical needs for economic development across the state.
“Governor Okowa’s commitment to peace and inclusivity was instrumental in maintaining stability, particularly in the oil-producing regions, which had previously faced frequent tensions,” Otiotio continued. “He established platforms for dialogue and promoted unity across ethnic groups, ensuring sustainable development through peace.”
The HOSTCOM Urhobo Youths credited Okowa with fostering a harmonious relationship between HOSTCOM and the Delta State Government, facilitating a cooperative environment for development. They acknowledged his administration's inclusive approach, which empowered marginalized groups, particularly through programs like STEP (Skills Training and Entrepreneurship Program) and YAGEP (Youth Agricultural Entrepreneurs Program), which helped thousands of young Deltans gain skills, self-reliance, and reduced unemployment.
“We view Okowa’s detention as unjust and unwarranted,” said Otiotio. “His dedication to Delta State as a transparent public servant, who placed people first, should be respected. We urge the EFCC to recognize his achievements and ensure that justice prevails by granting his immediate release.”
The Urhobo Youths’ statement has garnered widespread support across Delta communities who remember Okowa’s tenure as one that exemplified good governance and prioritized development. They hope the EFCC will respond to their call, allowing the former governor, a symbol of progress and integrity, to return to his life of service.
Quoting Lord Denning, Otiotio concluded, “When a judge sits to try a case, he himself is on trial before his fellow countrymen. The court of public opinion among Deltans has already vindicated Okowa—now let justice and fairness prevail by setting him free.”
The call for Okowa’s release reflects the high regard Deltans hold for a leader who, in their view, embodied dedication and service. As support grows, many believe Okowa’s legacy will inspire future leaders to follow his example of commitment, integrity, and transformational leadership.
