The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ondo State Council, has called on the state government to urgently relocate the sale of coffins at the premises of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital (UNIMEDTH), Akure Annex.
The union raised concerns over the psychological impact on patients and visitors, as the casket shop operates directly opposite the Outpatient Department (OPD) and close to the Emergency Unit.
This resolution was part of discussions during the final congress under the current administration, held on March 27, 2025, at the Press Centre, Alagbaka, Akure. Presided over by the council chairman, Prince Leke Adegbite, the congress was attended by members from various chapels of the union.
In his remarks, Prince Adegbite expressed gratitude to union members for their support and cooperation throughout his tenure.
He also commended the state executive members for their teamwork, which he credited for fostering unity and progress within the council.
Beyond the casket sales concern, the congress deliberated on other pressing issues, including security, healthcare, and media engagement.
The union noted with satisfaction the swift response of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to security challenges in the state, particularly the establishment of a Joint Task Force on Security.
However, it urged the government to provide security agencies with essential tools such as vehicles, drones, and trackers to enhance their effectiveness.
Additionally, the congress recommended recruiting more officers and equipping the Amotekun Corps with additional vehicles.
The deteriorating healthcare sector was another focal point, with the union calling on the state government to declare a state of emergency to address challenges in accessing quality and affordable medical services.
Members also urged the governor to revive the quarterly "Meet the Governor" media chat to keep the public informed about government policies and programs.
The congress commended the government’s decision to recruit teachers for primary and secondary schools but emphasized the need for fair distribution of personnel, especially in rural areas where the demand is higher.
The communique was drafted by Jacob Akintunde (Correspondents' Chapel), Olayinka Ogunleye (Digital Media Chapel), and Babatunde Ayedoju (Owena Press Chapel), and was electronically signed by the State Secretary, Olaoluwa Meshack.
