An independent security outfit, Benue Defenders, has raised concerns over alleged plans by certain Benue politicians based in Abuja to incite unrest in both Benue State and the Federal Capital Territory.
In a statement issued to the press on Friday, the group’s Public Relations Officer, Comrade Sunday Akor, accused Mr. Michael Msuaan and Hon. Chris Tarkaa—described as staunch supporters of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume—of orchestrating the planned demonstrations.
The group further claimed that the two politicians, in collaboration with Mr. Dan-Morgan, a former Publicity Secretary of the Benue State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), have allegedly brought in mercenaries from Cameroon and Ghana to disrupt peace in the targeted locations.
Part of the statement reads: “There is a plot to spill the blood of innocent Benue citizens. These individuals have allegedly received large sums of money to carry out killings in Abuja over an issue rooted in Benue. Why is Benue being singled out when the herder crisis affects many states across Nigeria and West Africa?”
Benue Defenders also alleged that thousands of protest materials—such as vests, placards, and flyers—have already been produced for use during the planned protests, which they claim are politically motivated and linked to the ongoing leadership tussle between Governor Hyacinth Alia and SGF Akume.
“These actors are not working in the interest of Benue people,” the group stated. “Their actions are driven solely by political rivalry. We believe they are connected to the recent wave of organized violence in the state, and we urge security agencies to monitor their movements closely.”
The group has appealed to the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant security agencies to intervene and halt any planned protests related to Benue State in Abuja, warning that such gatherings could lead to loss of lives.
They also urged security bodies to prevent any further demonstrations within Benue, alleging that the organizers intend to use armed thugs to carry out attacks under the guise of protest.
In conclusion, Benue Defenders called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to review the conduct of some of his appointees from the state, warning that their actions could cost the ruling party support in the 2027 general elections.
